Practical advice for growing our plants in Pretoria and the rest of South Africa. We'll add a new guide every month.
Clivia basics
- Light: bright shade. Morning sun is fine; hot afternoon sun burns the leaves.
- Soil: loose, well-drained mix with plenty of bark. Clivias hate wet feet.
- Water: water well, then let the top few centimetres dry out. Water less in winter.
- Frost: protect from frost. Under trees or a covered patio works well in Pretoria.
- Flowering: a cool, drier rest in winter helps them flower in spring (roughly August to October).
Cape plants in Pretoria
Proteas and many succulents come from winter-rainfall areas. In Pretoria, plant them in full sun with very good drainage, and avoid heavy watering in our hot, wet summers.
